St. John the Beloved Presents The In-Between
Trio Performs Selections from Two New CDs to be Released at the Concert
SUMMERVILLE, SC – The tenth season of the St. John the Beloved (SJB) Concert Series continues on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 4 p.m., with The In-Between, a trio featuring soprano Jill Terhaar Lewis, saxophonist Robert Lewis and pianist Gerald Gregory. Cellist Norbert Lewandowski will join the trio on some selections during the concert to be held in the church sanctuary at 28 Sumter Avenue.
The concert program will include music from two new CDs to be publicly released by The In-Between at the Nov. 5 concert. The CDs, entitled Deep in the Night and My Soul in Stillness Waits, were recorded and engineered in Charleston by GRAMMY-nominated producer Quentin Baxter. The CDs contain original music written by members of the ensemble as well as original arrangements of folk songs, standards, and hymns performed by the trio and guests Lewandowski and percussionist Ron Wiltrout.
In the spirit of recent collaborations between classical singers such as Renée Fleming and Anne Sofie von Otter with jazz musician/composers like Fred Hersch, André Previn, and Brad Mehldau, this group explores repertoire that lies both in and in between classical and jazz genres. Through open communication between the two art worlds of classical and jazz music, the program highlights the shared qualities and explores the differences while allowing the listener to enjoy these styles together in the same concert and even within the same piece.
The In-Between is a regular guest of the SJB Concert Series and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. They perform frequently in the region and have toured in South Carolina, the Pacific Northwest, and last summer in Denmark. They have collaborated with local musicians and recently with Charleston’s Poet Laureate Marcus Amaker on a program of Amaker’s poetry in spoken form as well as original musical settings by Robert Lewis and Gerald Gregory. The concert premiered at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival and will be reprised in October as part of the Free Verse Poetry Festival.
This concert is free and open to the public. A suggested $10 donation helps to fund the series and is appreciated. CDs from The In-Between will be available for purchase ($15) after the concert. For more information, contact St. John the Beloved at (843) 873-0631.
